Scottish step dance is a close to the floor style of percussive dancing which has origins in Scotland, although the tradition was carried by Scottish emigrant communities in Cape Breton, Canada. The style is danced to traditional Scottish music, however can be adapted to other styles of music.
Step dance is a great way to exercise, explore rhythm, improve musicality and have fun in a welcoming environment.
In this class, we will work on fundamental elements of steps, with a focus on dancing to strathspey and reel tune types. The classes will build on simple steps, adapting them to become more percussive, with combinations of steps being developed into a short choreography. This class is suitable for complete beginners and those with some previous experience. Steps can be modified to suit all levels.
Please wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Due to the percussive nature of the style hard soled shoes are preferred such as brogues. Trainers can be worn as long as they do not stick to the floor as this will hinder movement.
Please do not bring tap shoes as this will damage the floor.
